Cheese Boards & Trays from Noble Goods

  I spotted these solid American hardwood cheese boards and trays from Noble Goods while perusing the Design Milk curated Pop Up Shop during ICFF 2015. The Brooklyn-based design studio is run by stylist Molly FitzSimons and sculptor Christopher Moore, who started Noble Goods in the basement of their house on Noble Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The cheese boards are made of solid cherry, walnut, or maple with an environmentally friendly inlaid resin. Developed by surfers, the resin uses bioderived materials such as pine oils (sourced from wood pulp processing) and vegetable oil components (sourced from bio-fuel processing) instead of petroleum-based chemicals. The boards come in three styles: Arrow Boards which feature an arrow shape of inlaid resin in eight styles; Bullseye Boards which have a small circle of inlaid resin near the handle available in four styles, and Swiss Cheese boards, which come in cherry with a pale blue resin. Desktop Accessories by Beyond Object

Beyond Object is a design label of the London-based design studio Poetic Lab that creates and distributes “poetic objects” around the world, including desktop objects, accessories, and tableware that are manufactured and crafted in Taiwan. After creating a temporary showroom during Milan Design Week in April, Beyond Object presented their new line of sculptural desktop accessories during the Maison et Objet Americas fair held earlier this month in Miami. One of the stars of the new collection is Cantili, a tape dispenser made of a pair of cantilevered mirror polished concave disks available in gold, cooper, and silver finishes. Penpo is a magnetic desk organizer made of three tubes of different materials, height, and size that have magnetic joints to form playful combinations. Funno is a pencil sharpener machined from a solid block of metal and hand-polished to a mirror finish in various colors. Funno, which also doubles as a paperweight, comes in mirror-polished gold, copper, and silver. Last but not least, Lino is a structured letter opener that has been reduced down to its outline. The Penxo Pencil

If you have a thing for mechanical pencils, then you should meet Penxo, a minimalist 2mm lead holder with no springs, buttons, or mechanical parts. Designed by Brian Tong Tak, Penxo recently took home a Red Dot Award in the stationery category and fulfilled its Kickstarter goal in less than a day. So how does this magical writing utensil work? Each pencil, which is pressure-milled from a single block of aircraft-grade aluminum, uses a center window gap which functions as a lead trigger release when gently squeezed. This window also allows the user to read the lead color, brand, hardness labels, and most conveniently, check the amount of lead left inside. Expected to ship in July, the pencil will sell at a MSRP of $35 and initially be available in two colors — Dark Black and Rebel Silver. All images courtesy of Penxo.

Pup & Kit Pet Furniture

The Toronto-based modern pet furniture company Pup & Kit broke some barriers for animal-kind last March when they became the first pet-related company to exhibit at the Architectural Digest Home show in New York City. The company, founded in 2013 by Leslie Hemming, was invited to exhibit within the shows MADE section featuring bespoke products from across North America.   Pup & Kit offers several kinds of pet beds for both cats and dogs of all sizes, all handmade-to-order by local craftspeople in Toronto. The solid wood pieces are made of oak, walnut, or maple with an all-natural soy-based foam insert, and can be customized with a variety of fabric options made of outdoor Sunbrella fabrics. Float Table by Rock Paper Robot

The woman behind the innovative furnishings company RockPaperRobot (RPR) might be as fascinating as her designs. A trained roboticist with an Engineer’s and Master’s degree from MIT, Jessica Banks was in the Humanoid Robotics Group within the university’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab. She left graduate school just shy of her Ph.D. to teach about distributed power systems in MIT’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, and also holds a B.S. in General Physics from the University of Michigan, with a concentration in Creative Writing. And when you think she couldn’t be any cooler, you find out that she used to be Al Franken’s personal assistant. New from RPR is the Float Table, a magical Rubik’s Cube-like structure that elastically deforms and stabilizes when force is applied. The handcrafted table is a matrix of “magnetized” wooden cubes that levitate with respect to one another. The repelling cubes are held in equilibrium by a system of tensile steel cables. Float is available in a variety of woods and finishes as 38″ x 18.5″ x 18.5″ coffee table, a 18.5″ x 18.5″ side table, and in custom sizes. Shelving is …
