Desktop Accessories by Beyond Object

Beyond Object is a design label of the London-based design studio Poetic Lab that creates and distributes “poetic objects” around the world, including desktop objects, accessories, and tableware that are manufactured and crafted in Taiwan. After creating a temporary showroom during Milan Design Week in April, Beyond Object presented their new line of sculptural desktop accessories during the Maison et Objet Americas fair held earlier this month in Miami. One of the stars of the new collection is Cantili, a tape dispenser made of a pair of cantilevered mirror polished concave disks available in gold, cooper, and silver finishes. Penpo is a magnetic desk organizer made of three tubes of different materials, height, and size that have magnetic joints to form playful combinations. Funno is a pencil sharpener machined from a solid block of metal and hand-polished to a mirror finish in various colors. Funno, which also doubles as a paperweight, comes in mirror-polished gold, copper, and silver. Last but not least, Lino is a structured letter opener that has been reduced down to its outline. Zipbuds Earbuds

There is an episode of the indie hit show Portlandia, where a couple is buying a housewarming present for a friend and ends up in a trendy “knot store” that literally sells different kinds of knots. The salesperson (played to quirky perfection by Jeffrey Goldblum) convinces them to buy some tangled earbuds in a glass vitrine as a piece of  home decor. Explains Goldblum, “an artist we work with makes these by jamming them into his pocket.” He then purrs inexplicably. The makers of Zipbuds have a new solution to avoid the inevitable pocket-stress on your earbud wires. Zipbuds are tangle-free earphones with a patented zipper technology that allow you to literally zip-up the wires together so that they can’t get tangled. This “vertebrae design” is lightweight and uses high-performance military grade cabling to reduce fraying or distorted cables. The earbuds are made to minimize ear pressure and fit comfortably, and include three custom-fitted ear tips. They are compatible with Apple, Android, Windows Phone, and other media devices that accept traditional 3.5mm headphone input and come in black, …

Iittala’s Ruutu Vase Collection by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec

Finnish brand Iittala has teamed up with the Paris-based designers (and this year’s London Design Medalists) Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec to design Ruutu, a collection of 10 vases available in five sizes and seven colors. Ruutu, which means diamond or square in Finnish, can be combined to make seamless installations where delicate, watercolor-like palettes and light seem to melt together like molten glass. Like Ittala’s iconic Alvar Aalto collection, Ruutu is created in Iittala’s Finnish factory where each vase takes seven craftsmen 24 hours to produce symmetrical items that still look and feel handmade. Each vase has the designers’ name engraved on the base. The vases will be available for purchase in early 2015. All images courtesy Iittala. A little video where the designers discuss their design:

Formwork Desk Accessories

Designed by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin for Herman Miller‘s Objects program, Formwork is a modular system of containers that can be arranged, stacked, and combined to best organize the gadgets and desk accessories that you need closest at hand. The small and large trays feature cantilevered ledges for easy stacking and access. For the collection’s  large and small boxes, designed for bulkier items, the designers added removable lids and holes that can double as cup holders. The media stand is angled on a silicon base so that it stays in place, not matter how many times you toss your phone on it.  All images courtesy of Herman Miller.

Inception Dish Rack/Desk Organizer by Luca Nichetto

Launched last month during the Wanted Design exhibition during NYCxDesign, Inception is a dish rack/desk organizer designed by Luca Nichetto for the Italian brand Seletti. Named after the mind-bending 2010 movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and inspired by the folding cities in the movie, Inception’s silicone buildings slightly bend with the weight of the objects. The organizer comes in pink, blue, or gray (shown below).
